LASER_DRAWING#2 / LASER_GRAPHS
Galerie Kai Brückner Düsseldorf
Installation/Photo Work:
Argon laser, pane of glass, camera module, monitor, C-print: 49 x 74 cm
The exhibition presents, for one, the direct production process accompanied by a video projection, and, two, the experimental photographic results that then occur: the “laser_graphs”.
The installation is found in the lower part of the TZR gallery with the title “Trial setup for exploring aesthetic possibilities”: the highly focused light from the laser is directed past a 49x74cm Plexiglas pane, within whose field moving dust particles materialize in the air. All that goes on within the laser beam is captured by a video camera installed at right angles, blown up in size and projected onto a screen set up in the room. A micro camera scans the beam and simultaneously transmits the images onto a monitor. Since the laser beam is very bright and thin and the house dust floats through the narrow passage in fractions of seconds, the particles – like shooting stars – light up in a flash, only to snuff out immediately. But on the dark TV screen, the dazzling white specks of dust enjoy an afterglow of several seconds.
LASER_GRAPHS: the dust visible in the laser beam is reflected onto the light-sensitive material. Following the principle of the photogram (photography without a camera), the procedure is
recorded as a “shadow print”.
